Spotlight on the Selkie Network – Intertek

Intertek Energy & Water (formerly Metoc) is an internationally-recognised consultancy founded in the 1980s providing specialist technical services such as highly-valued modelling solutions in the marine, coastal and river environments. As a member of the Intertek Group, our core team of around 50 experts, based out of four UK offices, works with our clients primarily in the offshore renewables, marine cables, water and oil & gas sectors.  For 30+ years we have acted as independent expert advisers and project managers on marine and coastal infrastructure projects for operators, developers, utilities, asset managers, lenders and government organisations. We support our clients during early planning, environmental assessment and engineering, through construction and installation to operation, life extension and decommissioning.

We provide a range of services from site investigation and characterisation, through to numerical modelling, cable routeing, environmental assessments and consenting & permitting.  We are and have been involved in numerous exciting marine renewable projects — at site, regional and national level. One of our key specialisms is numerical modelling of hydrodynamics (including tides and waves), sediments (including offshore, nearshore and shoreline morphology), and water quality. We have a dedicated modelling team backed by a large pool of high-specification multi-processor dedicated modelling workstations. Recognised by our clients worldwide for our technical expertise, in-house bespoke tools and innovative solutions, we help them meet environmental quality objectives, optimise engineering design and operation, and secure regulatory compliance.

Given our expertise and general interest in the marine energy industry, we are delighted to be part of the Selkie Network.  We have been participating in a variety of useful and interesting webinars, workshops and networking events, and have particularly found the networking events useful as a way of meeting like-minded individuals and understanding the industry needs.  Although this project is still in its early stages, we look forward to playing an active role in not only development of the various tools but also providing our expertise to help drive the marine energy industry forward with the ultimate goal of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and helping the world reach net zero.
