SELKIE delivers full support at MEW2023

SELKIE went all out at what will be the project’s last representation at the largest conference dedicated to Marine Energy in the United Kingdom.   MEW2023 was held at the impressive Swansea Arena, 21-22 March. This year’s conference was the most attended event by far, with over 500 delegates from across the wave, tidal and floating offshore wind sectors gathering for two full days of panel sessions, workshops, keynote speeches, business meetings,  exhibitions, demonstrations and networking.

SELKIE were proud to be amongst the sponsorship event supporters which included the likes of ABP, equinor, ERM, Floventis, MarinesSpace, RPS , SSE Renewables and Welsh Government.

The Selkie stand in the exhibition hall had a steady flow of discussion and engagement throughout the 2 days with particular interest in the SELKIE GAD-CFD and C-ADCP tools which were aptly developed by Swansea University.

Selkie Project Manager, TJ Horgan, gave two measured and informative presentations on the panel sessions ‘This Year’s Research Highlights’ and ‘Problem Solving Projects’.  The presentation slides from these sessions can be viewed below.

A key highlight of the event was the First Minister’s Key note speech, in which he highlighted Welsh government’s commitment with the recent announcement of the tidal lagoon revenue support.  The keynote speech spanned the full breadth of the marine energy sector, covering wave, tidal and floating offshore wind. Telling delegates the Welsh Government was determined to see full-range of benefits coming to Wales from floating offshore wind development in the Celtic Sea, he spoke about the need for The Crown Estate to secure strong and binding supply chain development plans.

The conference offered a great opportunity for face to face interactions with some of the SELKIE network members. It was particularly encouraging seeing the likes of Marine Power Systems and ORPC at the event, who both benefitted from the SELKIE funded tank testing at LIR National Ocean Testing Facility last year.
